The KC Chiefs could possibly look to add a tight end in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The offseason promises to be interesting and could see the Kansas City Chiefs faced with difficult choices, such as how they proceed with set to be free agents Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson. While the Chiefs could certainly look to add another receiver during the draft, they may also look to add depth to their tight end position. Can they replace departing receivers with athletic, coverage mismatch tight ends?

During the lead-up to previous drafts, the Chiefs have certainly done their homework at the tight end position and I expect nothing to change this year. Yes, the Chiefs have Travis Kelce and yes, he’s really good. He will also be 32 next season and the team has no one behind him.

As a team, their most assured way to victory is passing the football on offense. To ensure continued victory, the team must ensure they continue to add depth and talent at the pass-catcher position.

KC Chiefs Tight End Prospects – Pat Freiermuth (Penn State)
To make the synopsis short and sweet, Pat Freiermuth is perhaps my favorite Chiefs skill position draft target. While the Chiefs do have Kelce, they have nothing behind him and appear likely to lose depth at receiver with the impending departures of Watkins and Robinson. Another is the impending departure of Anthony Sherman. Could Freiermuth help take the role of Sherman?

Freiermuth has the positional versatility to allow the Chiefs to kill two birds with one stone, adding depth at both tight end and pass-catching threat with one pick. The question isn’t if he is a good fit in the Chiefs offense, it’s a question of if he will be available when the Chiefs pick in the first round.

With good size already at 6’5″ and 260 pounds, the Penn State product is the top two-way tight end (blocking+receiving) available in the 2021 NFL Draft. Freiermuth has seen a lot of football.

The Penn State product is the ideal combination of player, fit, and needs that the Chiefs should consider in the upcoming NFL Draft. Brett Veach, Andy Reid, and company will strongly consider making the Nittany Lion a Chief if he is available when the KC selection comes up.

The Chiefs have been relying on Williams as a third-down back for the most part, but he’s due for an expanded role with Edwards-Helaire sidelined. He’s been good in pass protection on third down and catching passes out of the backfield. In addition to his third-down role, I think the Chiefs might use him a bit more frequently in short-yardage situations to help complement and spell Le’Veon Bell.

When Edwards-Helaire missed Week 13 against the Broncos with a stomach illness, Williams played in 48% of the offensive snaps. He had six carries for 38 yards and he caught a pass for five yards on two targets. I think you can anticipate similar usage and production against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 16.

Opportunity knocks for Darwin Thompson

Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said on Thursday that Darwin Thompson would receive some opportunities with Edwards-Helaire out. The former sixth-round draft pick has been in the doghouse since losing a fumble in Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens. This will be an opportunity for the second-year player to redeem himself and perhaps earn more of a role on offense heading into the playoffs.

If Thompson looks improved late in the season and builds some positive momentum heading into 2021, that’d be a big deal for the Chiefs as they wouldn’t be forced to exhaust future draft capital to secure another backup running back.

Remember back during Patrick Mahomes’ Week 17 debut against the Denver Broncos back in 2017? Anthony Sherman was the main running back in that game and had 14 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown, plus three catches for 21 yards. He’s fully capable of coming in and taking over running back duties if necessary. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him get some work at running back in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Chargers this year.

The Kansas City Chiefs are planning to rest a number of starters against the Los Angeles Chargers today.

The backfield is an area where they could look quite different. According to a new report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Darwin Thompson is expected to get the bulk of the carries in Week 17. It’s possible that Thompson could even get the start for the Chiefs.

Thompson, a former sixth-round draft pick in 2019, only has 13 carries on the season so far. His single-game high in carries came back against the Broncos in Week 13 of 2019 with 11 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown. This is going to be a chance for the seldom-used back to prove that he’s worthy of more opportunities within the Kansas City offense.

As for who will spell Thompson when he’s in need of a rest, many expected Darrel Williams to be that guy, but it could actually be Le’Veon Bell. According to Rapoport, Bell will dress but is expected to play very little if at all.

If the Chiefs wanted to avoid using Bell they have other options as well. Williams is, of course, one option. Fullback Anthony Sherman also could be in line for some carries and catches on Sunday too.

The Chiefs’ list of players not working Thursday remained the same from Wednesday.

Rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle), running back Le’Veon Bell (knee), wide receiver Tyreek Hill (hamstring), right tackle Mike Remmers (back), linebacker Ben Niemann (hamstring) and wide receiver Sammy Watkins (calf) missed a second straight day of practice.

With the Chiefs clinching the AFC No. 1 overall seed and securing a first-round postseason bye, it makes sense for the Chiefs to rest all six during Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

If Bell and Edwards-Helaire don’t play in Week 17, the Chiefs will lean on Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson. The team could also elect to elevate Elijah McGuire from the practice sqaud to provide depth on the active 53-player roster.

The Chiefs added two starters from defense to the injury report.

Defensive end Frank Clark (illness) and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (knee) put in a limited practice Thursday. The workout designation often signals the duo participated in the stretching/conditioning and individual position drills portion of practice, but not team-related drills.

Linebacker Damien Wilson was limited for a second straight day. Wilson is attempting to return to action for the first time since suffering a knee injury in Week 13.

Cornerback Charvarius Ward (hamstring) and defensive tackle Mike Pennel (back) continue to practice fully.

For the Chargers, wide receiver Keenan Allen was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Safety Jahleel Addae (calf), defensive end Joey Bosa (shin, concussion), tackle Bryan Bulaga (foot), cornerback Casey Howard Jr. (hamstring), linebacker Malik Jefferson (shoulder), safety Rayshawn Jenkins (ankle) and tackle Sam Tevi (knee) did not practice.

Linebacker Denzel Perryman (back), cornerback Chris Harris Jr. (foot), wide receiver Jalen Guyton (hamstring), tight end Donald Parham Jr. (illness) and safety Nasir Adderley (ankle) practice fully.

The Kansas City Chiefs notched their seventh victory of the season against the New York Jets on Sunday. It went just as everyone expected, with the Chiefs amassing a comfortable lead heading into the fourth quarter. That allowed an opportunity for backup QB Chad Henne and several reserve players to get some snaps for the second consecutive week. So what did we learn about the Chiefs from the snaps in this game?

Here’s a look at how the snaps played out in Week 8:

There was a much better balance to offensive and defensive snaps this week compared to last week.
Eric Fisher and Mike Remmers are the only offensive linemen who played 100% of the offensive snaps. Yasir Durant, Austin Reiter and Danny Isidora relieved the interior offensive line for a whole two snaps.
Chad Henne was in the game for 12 snaps, sending Patrick Mahomes to the bench after the lead was well-secured. He didn’t get the touchdown this week, but he burnt quite a bit of clock.
Le’Veon Bell played in just 17 snaps against his former team. So much for a “revenge game.” The game flow didn’t really call for a large portion of snaps from the running game, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the field for just 50% of the offensive snaps.
Mecole Hardman and Byron Pringle had more snaps than Demarcus Robinson this week. Each of the three receivers has stepped up in various ways in the absence of Sammy Watkins, yet it’s good to see some of the newer guys getting more play and thriving.

Deon Yelder and Nick Keizer have their second week of a near 50-50 split in terms of snaps. It seems that they’re both being utilized in different formations. Keizer seems to play with more horizontal blocking, while Yelder plays with more North-South stuff.
Tershawn Wharton played 31 defensive snaps and is carving out a nice little role for himself on defense. He notched his first career sack on Sam Darnold in Week 8.
Mike Danna played in 25 snaps in his return from a hamstring injury. He didn’t look quite as explosive in pursuit this week, but that’s to be expected at least early on.
Willie Gay Jr. played in just nine defensive snaps. His snap counts have been heavily tied to the amount of base defense the Chiefs are forced to play. The Jets rarely utilize three tight ends, especially when they’re playing from behind all game long.
Reserve defenders saw just three defensive snaps with BoPete Keyes, Tedric Thompson, Antonio Hamilton and Armani Watts getting some play in the secondary.
Dorian O’Daniel, Armani Watts and Antonio Hamilton led the team in special teams snaps with 23. Watts even had a blocked field goal at the end of the first half.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 35-31 on Sunday night, extending their season record to 9-1 and taking firm control of the AFC West race. Let’s see show the Chiefs used their players in the victory.

Starters (offensive): WR Tyreek Hill, LT Eric Fisher, LG Nick Allegretti, C Austin Reiter, RG Andrew Wylie, RT Mike Remmers, WR Byron Pringle, WR Demarcus Robinson, TE Travis Kelce, QB Patrick Mahomes and RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Offensive takeaways
There were no new injuries on the offensive line on Sunday night, so Eric Fisher, Nick Allegretti, Austin Reiter, Andrew Wylie and Mike Remmers (subbing in for Mitchell Schwartz) played together on every offensive snap.

Starting tight end Travis Kelce was on the field for a typical percentage of plays — 89%. But counts for both Nick Keizer and Deon Yelder were up a bit.

Even though he was back to his normal special-teams snap count for the Carolina Panthers game two weeks ago, against the Raiders, fullback Anthony Sherman saw his first use on offense after missing three games on the reserve/COVID list.

The running back-by-committee approach we saw against the Panthers continued against the Raiders. It’s becoming more and more clear that Darrel Williams is the go-to back when the Chiefs need an additional pass blocker.

After spending some of the bye week break on the reserve/COVID list, wide receiver Mecole Hardman was activated just in time for Sunday’s game — but outside of Tyreek Hill and Demarcus Robinson, most of the wide receiver offensive snaps went to Byron Pringle, who had his lowest special-teams use of the season.

Defensive takeaways
As we have come to expect, safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Daniel Sorensen were on the field for every defensive snap. But Juan Thornhill — the only other safety who saw time on defense — was hardly used at all, getting his lowest appearance rate of the season. Instead, he had his first special-teams snaps of the year. Asked about it after the game, head coach Andy Reid said that Thornhill was used that way deliberately, saying that he’s “a situational guy right now.” He then said the team is “going to bring him back slowly” — but offered no additional information.

Cornerbacks Bashaud Breeland and Charvarius Ward each had 93% of the defensive snaps. Meanwhile, rookie corner L’Jarius Sneed got a little time on defense on special teams in his first game back from his broken collarbone — apparently at the expense of second-year player Rashad Fenton, who has now carved out a special-teams role.

At linebacker, Anthony Hitchens and Damien Wilson were each used more than we’ve seen for a while — and Ben Niemann saw his lowest use of the season. Meanwhile, it now seems more and more likely that rookie Willie Gay Jr. is being used situationally on a per-game basis; he seems to be getting a consistent number of snaps — primarily against the run — when game plans call for it.

Defensive end Frank Clark was on the field for nearly every snap. After missing three games with a hamstring injury, Alex Okafor came in exactly where he left off in Week 5. It looks like those snaps came at the expense of Tanoh Kpassagnon and Michael Danna. Danna also had special-teams snaps for the first time since Week 4.

As usual, defensive tackle Chris Jones was in on the most interior snaps. Derrick Nnadi got more work than we’ve been seeing lately — and Mike Pennel’s use came back up a bit. That led to fewer snaps for rookie Tershawn Wharton.
