Custom Mecole Hardman Jersey Large

The Chiefs injury report on Thursday looks a lot like the one they handed in on Wednesday, but there was one notable addition to the list of injured players.

Rookie wide receiver/kick returner Mecole Hardman was limited in practice due to a glute injury. Hardman was not on the report at all on Wednesday.

Friday will bring more word on Hardman’s outlook for Sunday night’s game against the Bears. The second-round pick was named to the Pro Bowl as a return specialist this week.

Left guard Andre Wylie (illness, ankle, shoulder) remained the only player out of practice. Cornerback Morris Claiborne (shoulder) and running back Damien Williams (rib) joined Hardman in the limited category.

Custom Juan Thornhill Jersey Large

If the Oakland Raiders wanted to keep their hopes of winning the AFC West alive, they needed quarterback Derek Carr to throw touchdowns again the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately, he threw one to the other team after Chiefs safety Juan Thornhill burned him for a pick-six.

After watching Kansas City take a 14-0 lead late in the second quarter, Carr tried to make a big play happen for Oakland’s offense. Instead, he stared down his receiver and Thornhill read the play perfectly to jump the route and take it the distance.

It’s already Carr’s second interception of the first half and things aren’t going to get easier for the Raiders. Facing a three-score deficit, Oakland will need to put the ball in Carr’s hands even more and that has already had disastrous consequences.

Custom Nick Allegretti Jersey Large

Once again, the Kansas City Chiefs were without a first round pick, so their first selection in the 2019 NFL Draft was wide receiver Mecole Hardman out of Georgia, who they selected 56th overall. Also joining Hardman on the rookie depth chart in round two was Virginia safety Juan Thornhill, who Kansas City grabbed with pick 63.

In the third round, defensive tackle Khalen Saunders joined the party and then it became a long wait before the Chiefs would be on the clock again. They drafted South Carolina cornerback Rashad Fenton in the sixth round (pick 201) and Utah State running back Darwin Thompson with the 214th selection.

Two picks later, and the second pick in the final round, Nick Allegretti heard his name called by Kansas City. Allegretti was an offensive lineman at Illinois.

So, how have these six rookies graded out so far? I’ll only be using a grade scale of A, B, C, D, and F, as well as N/A for players we haven’t seen enough film on; None of this “C+” or “C-” stuff. Without further ado, let’s take a look.

As fast and electrifying as Mecole Hardman has been for the KC Chiefs as a rookie, for every explosive play he has, he follows it up with a frustrating mistake.

The Chiefs clearly feel the same way too, as he’s been seeing less snaps on offense and used more on special teams. Special teams haven’t really been kind to Hardman either; He has fumbling issues and also has issues with fielding punts when he shouldn’t.

Hardman’s offensive stats consist of 23 receptions for 450 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 19.6 yards per reception. The numbers are fine, but with less snaps to prove himself and the fumbles being a strong reason for why the Chiefs have gone away from Hardman a little more, I couldn’t give him anything higher than an average grade.

Custom Mike Pennel Jersey Large

Evie St. John showed off a couple fingernails, freshly painted with a light pink hue. She didn’t care how exactly they looked.

What mattered more? They had been painted by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Damien Wilson, who along with teammate Mike Pennel and Royals outfielders Alex Gordon and Bubba Starling, helped the Community Services League and area professionals pamper 30 women with Tuesday’s single mothers spa day at BlendWell Community Cafe in western Independence.

“This is worth it,” St. John said, before getting a portrait picture taken with her 5-year-old son Matthew.

The women, identified by CSL’s financial coaches and other workers around Eastern Jackson County, received manicures, some makeup work, chair massages, a portrait shot, a gift bag, coffee if they wished and plenty of photo ops.

If needed, CSL provided babysitting in the basement of BlendWell, a former bank building on U.S. 24 west of Sterling Avenue.

“It’s been great so far,” said Jesse Payne, even before she received a massage. “It’s amazing what they’re doing, giving the mothers a break. I don’t get much time like this, with five kids.”

The Community Services League often works with the Chiefs and Royals for various events, but when the organizations called shortly after Thanksgiving, President/CEO Doug Cowan said, they hoped to do something different.

“Normally they would do something with kids, but they said ‘Let’s do something for single moms.’ How can we execute that?” Cowan said. “So we concepted this event.”

“Single mothers, we know that can be stressful, especially this season,” he said, “so let’s make the focus on her. We wanted the attention to be on the moms.”

While Ana Reyes, who manages BlendWell Cafe, showed the Starling and Gordon how to make a French vanilla latte, then showed the ropes to Wilson and Pennel, Tameka Meneal reveled in the attention she received during a pedicure.

“I’ve never been near a celebrity!” she said.

Another mother, fashionably late to the gathering, was immediately introduced to Pennel and seemed taken aback by the local celebrities present.

“Come here, I don’t do handshakes,” Pennel exclaimed as he promptly moved in for a hug.

Though technically a free agent, Gordon hopes to re-sign and finish his career with the Royals, and the team’s publicity director, Toby Cook, said the organization had no problem with Gordon donning a jersey at such an event.

“Alex is Alex, and he wanted to do this,” Cook said.

Gordon said he was “just trying to make the rounds, bringing some joy people during this holiday season.”

St. John said the community involvement for the single mothers’ spa day was “incredible.”

“The Christmas spirit was definitely involved with this,” she said. “The joy in the mothers’ faces, you could see that as they received their gifts.

All (my son) wanted was a signature from one of the Chiefs players, and he got it.”

Custom Jackson Barton Jersey Large

Bears cornerback Prince Amukamara is available to play Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs despite a hamstring injury which has plagued him for three weeks.

Amukamara practiced on a limited basis this week and was ruled questionable for the game after playing through the injury last week. Kevin Toliver II played for Amukamara against Dallas two weeks ago because of the hamstring injury.

Custom Spencer Ware Jersey Large

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With injuries mounting at running back, the Kansas City Chiefs signed veteran Spencer Ware.

Ware played for the Chiefs from 2015 through last season and led the team in rushing in 2016 with 921 yards.

Injuries to Damien Williams (rib) and Darrel Williams (hamstring) left the Chiefs before Ware’s signing with only LeSean McCoy and rookie Darwin Thompson at running back. McCoy leads the Chiefs (8-4) in rushing with 410 yards while Thompson, in his first extended playing time of the season, led the team with 44 yards and scored his first NFL touchdown in Sunday’s victory over the Raiders.

The Chiefs released recently signed wide receiver Gehrig Dieter.

Custom Terrell Suggs Jersey Large

Terrell Suggs joined the Chiefs via a waiver claim last week and he made his first game appearance with his new team on Sunday night.

Suggs appeared on 17 snaps in a rotational role and was credited with one tackle in the 26-3 victory over the Bears. The veteran pass rusher said after the game that it was “humbling and flattering” to join a team that’s been playing as well as the Chiefs have been playing recently.

“The boys are balling. I’m just an added addition to an already-moving train. It’s a good start and it’s on to next week. . . . There’s not much I can do. They were in the AFC Championship last year,” Suggs said, via the Kansas City Star. “The only thing I can do is try to help us get back there and help us actually punch the ticket this time.”

The Chiefs defense has been rolling of late and getting some vintage performances from Suggs off the edge would be a good way of keeping that going into the postseason.

Custom Will Shields Jersey Large

Will Shields was special early. You didn’t see many Nebraska offensive linemen playing as freshmen, as Shields did in 1989. That was just a preview of things to come.

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound guard out of Lawton, Oklahoma, helped the Huskers to an outright Big Eight championship in 1992 and a co-championship in 1991. He blocked for a host of top-notch runners, including Calvin Jones, Derek Brown, Leodis Flowers and Ken Clark.

Nebraska captured national rushing titles in 1989, ’91 and ’92, the year Shields won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior lineman.

He was an iron man in the NFL as well. A third-round draft choice, Shields never missed a game in his 14 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. He blocked for Marcus Allen, Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson, among others.

Shields was named to the Pro Bowl 12 times, was a two-time first-team All-Pro and appeared in eight playoff games.

Shields was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015. His son Shavon was to enter the 2015-16 season as a senior on the Nebraska basketball team.

Custom Warren Moon Jersey Large

There are plenty of Atlanta Falcons fans that refuse to acknowledge some of the good that has come out of this season because they will miss the playoffs for a second consecutive year. While that is understandable, at this point we should take what we can get and hope that a potential 6-2 post-bye-week finish leads to a better 2020.

That said, there are a couple different reasons to at least enjoy this season.

Earlier this year Julio broke Jerry Rice’s record for the fastest receiver to get to 11 thousand career receiving yards. Then in Week 16, Julio broke Rice’s record for the fastest receiver to collect 12 thousand receiving yards.

As we all know, Jerry Rice is the standard for which all wide receiver’s past and present are compared to. Through nine seasons, Julio is on track to break nearly all of Rice’s NFL receiving records.

Julio came into the 2019 season with five consecutive 1,400 yard receiving seasons. With 86 yards this week against the Bucs, Julio will record his sixth straight and extend his NFL record.

Matt Ryan has broken several records this season as well. Despite missing his third career start and the second game overall as the Atlanta Falcons quarterback.

Earlier this season, Matt Ryan became the 10th quarterback in NFL history to throw for 50 thousand yards and passed Warren Moon all-time. Last week against the Jaguars, Matt Ryan went over the four thousand yard threshold for the ninth consecutive year. No other player has a current streak that long; Drew Brees has the record at 12, which ended in 2018 after he sat out Week 16.

There were a lot of expectations on Oliver coming into 2019. We wrote back in the summer that Isaiah Oliver was going to be the most tested corner in the NFL. Sitting opposite of Desmond Trufant and being a second-year corner meant opposing offensive coordinators and quarterbacks were going to come after him.

Oliver struggled mightily under Dan Quinn’s system. Since Quinn moved Raheem Morris to coach the secondary and take over the defense, Oliver has been a completely different player. He has shown flashes as being the corner everyone was hoping that he would be when he was drafted out of Colorado in 2018.

Dare to say, Oliver is the most improved player in the Falcons roster in 2019.

After a 1-7 start to the season, there didn’t seem to be anything going right for the Atlanta Falcons. Dan Quinn finally got out of his own way and turned the defense over to coaches who put this team in a much better position to be successful.

The Atlanta Falcons have the two biggest wins of the season and both happen to be on the road. The first one came the week after the bye-week in New Orleans. The Falcons embarrassed the Saints 26-9, holding the Saints to nearly three touchdowns under their season average.

Two weeks ago the Atlanta Falcons went to Santa Clara and upset the NFC leading 49ers 29-22. This was the first time that the Falcons have faced former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan since Super Bowl LI.

Beating the top two teams in the NFC amid a terrible season gives hope that the Falcons can compete with anyone in the NFL and gives fans a reason to be hopeful heading into the 2020 season.

Custom Ty Law Jersey Large

Last season, in his second with the New England Patriots, Stephon Gilmore put himself in the conversation of being the best cornerback in the league.

This label is often talked about every year around the league because it such a well-earned title considering the talent level of wide receivers in the NFL. Since then, Gilmore has risen his game even further.

Now there really shouldn’t even be a conversation anymore. “The Gilly Lock” has risen far and above everyone else. He has that shutdown label, where most opposing quarterbacks don’t even like looking his way.

He remains tied for fourth so far this season with 4 interceptions and has allowed the lowest reception rate from CB’s with 70+ targets at 48.6 percent. He has given up 0 touchdowns, 401 yards and an average of 12.0 yards per catch.

All numbers that put him on a different planet compared to other corners. No Bill Belichick player through his historic run in New England has put up these kind of numbers.

If he can contain Tyreek Hill this Sunday, Gilmore will ultimately staple his Defensive Player of the Year campaign.

It is also worth mentioning that he and DeAndre Hopkins exchanged some words following Sunday night’s loss in Houston. Hopkins posted a tweet implying the Patriots limited him by doubling defenders on him the whole game. While Gilmore corrected him by saying he was only double-teamed 2 snaps throughout thee duration of the game.

Gilmore is just the 8th highest paid cornerback in the league, averaging $13 million per season. This rank should continue to fall as well, with other future cornerback stars, such as Jalen Ramsey hitting the market this offseason.

Outside of Darrelle Revis‘ one year pit stop in New England, Bill Belichick has never really had this level corner since Ty Law back in 2003 season.
